Vancouver Coastal Health is looking for a Registered Nurse OR Registered Psychiatric Nurse to join the Regional Overdose Outreach Team based in Sechelt to provide outreach nursing case management support to clients at risk for overdose or dealing with problematic substance use at Sechelt Hospital as an Addiction Nurse. As an Addiction Nurse with VCH you will:
- Provide direct nursing care and supportive counseling to clients who are in the process of detoxification, stabilization and/or transitioning into other Long Term Care addiction services, working effectively with challenging clients to maintain a safe environment for clients and staff.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members, educational resources and other health professionals and care providers from multi-jurisdictional sectors such as housing, justice and/or health, to achieve excellence in client-centred care and education.
ABOUT THE OVERDOSE OUTREACH TEAM:
Our team of outreach and social workers and peers provide connections for people who have recently experienced opioid overdose and/or are at high risk for opioid overdose to substance use care and support.
We help clients:
- Navigation to appropriate services (e.g., primary care, detox, treatment, etc.)
- Support in accessing Opioid Agonist Therapy (OAT) (e.g., methadone, suboxone, iOAT, etc.)
- Overdose prevention education
The Overdose Outreach Team does not provide long-term case management services. However, we will support clients in accessing the long term supports as need.

ABOUT SECHELT, BC

QUALIFICATIONS:
Education & Experience
- Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse with the BC College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
- Two (2) years’ recent, related experience providing treatment services to individuals with mental health and/or addiction issues or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Valid Driver's License. Local area travel may require the use of a personal vehicle.
Knowledge & Abilities
- Knowledge of the principles of recovery and trauma informed practice
- Broad knowledge of nursing theory and practice within a client/family-centred model of care.
- Broad knowledge of BCCNM Standards for Nursing Practice.
- Broad knowledge of substance use and a positive attitude toward substance dependent clients and their rehabilitation.
- Broad knowledge of community residential services available for clients experiencing Substance use problems.
- Broad knowledge of behaviour management and ability to utilize non-violent crisis intervention strategies in a trauma informed manner.
- Broad knowledge of facilitation, mediation, and conflict resolution techniques and demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills.
- Demonstrated skill in CPR Techniques.
- Demonstrated case management, teaching/training, clinical support and consultation skills.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary team environment.
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize, work independently, and use a cooperative approach to program delivery.
- Demonstrated ability to carry out the physical demands of the job.
The hours of work including days off and work area may be subject to change consistent with operational requirements and the provision of the Collective Agreement and applicable statutes.
As per the current Public Health Orders (Long Term Care/Seniors Assisted Living Provincial Health Officer Order and the Health Sector Order), as of October 26, 2021, all employees working for Vancouver Coastal Health must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19. Proof of vaccination status will be required.
